Though the Church was first built in 1112, but the modern (the present Church) was built in the early twentieth century under the direction of Mar Aloysius Pazheparambil . St. Mary’s Syro-Malabar Cathedral Basilica also has a altar that was used by pope John Paul II, when he visited the Church in 7 February 1986.
Apart from the main prayer hall, it also has two 68 feet tall towers in the front with statues of St Paul and St Peter on top. When we talk about the bell tower (88 feet high) it has St. Thomas statue on top.
